Today I'm covering Shackfuyu, the newly launched brainchild of hit Ramen joint Bone Daddies. I pottered on down to Covent Garden the other day to get the full scoop.
What should you expect? Small plates of Japanese fusion food, built for sharing and delicious from start to finish. I kicked off with Korean Fried Wings; juicy, coated in sauce and delightfully messy. What else? Probably the best prawn toast you’ll ever try and a Mac ‘n’ Cheese flavoured with cods roe and topped with some rather dodgy sounding ‘cock scratchings’…(dried chicken skin between you and me). Their beef and rice brings interactivity to the plate with the dish finished off live in front of you on a sizzling hot stone. Ever eaten Japanese food from a pizza oven? I hadn’t either, but their beef picanha dish is roasted off in one and served in the most ridiculously epic kimchi glaze.
I can’t claim to have ever gotten excited about an aubergine before, but Shackfuyu has changed all that. Marinated in 4 kinds of miso and topped with crunchy little balls of puffed rice that taste like popcorn, this was undoubtedly the best dish of the day.
They only serve one dessert but god, it's a goodun: kinako French toast with a towering splodge of green tea ice cream.
Even the drinks menu is exciting. With the exception of the frozen yuzu margarita, the cocktails weren’t that special, but the real highlight comes in the extensive sake menu on offer, including one made especially for Bone Daddies.
In summary; Shackfuyu impressed at every turn. Really, really good food, interesting drink pairings and a cool, rocky vibe. A wopping 8 out of 10 stars from me.
